Load-Shedding Resilience: How BESS and Embedded Generation Protect Your Operations

As load-shedding threatens SA industrial output, battery storage plus embedded generation is the go-to fix for facilities that can't afford downtime.

South African industry lost an estimated R900 billion to load-shedding in 2023. Even at Stage 2—two two-hour blocks per day—continuous-process plants face ramp-down and start-up costs that dwarf the value of the energy withheld. For facilities running high-inertia equipment or temperature-sensitive processes, a clean, reliable electricity supply is not optional.

The Architecture of a Resilient Microgrid

A modern resilience solution layers three elements:

1. Solar PV Array

Roof-mounted or ground-mounted panels generate low-cost daytime energy, offset grid consumption, and feed surplus power into the storage system. Industrial sites with large flat roofs—warehouses, assembly plants, distribution centres—often achieve 50–80% of daytime demand from solar alone.

2. Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

A BESS absorbs surplus solar generation and Eskom off-peak energy, then discharges during peak tariff windows or outages. Modern lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries offer 6,000+ cycle life at 80% depth-of-discharge, with a 10-year bankable warranty from reputable manufacturers.

Sizing is critical. For a 500 kW critical load requiring 4-hour autonomy, you need at least 2 MWh of usable capacity—accounting for round-trip efficiency (≈90%) and battery health degradation over the warranty period.

3. Intelligent Transfer and Protection Switchgear

This is where switchgear becomes the linchpin. An automatic transfer switch (ATS) or static transfer switch (STS) detects grid loss and transfers the critical busbar to islanded operation within milliseconds. The protection relay scheme must:

  • Prevent islanding from back-feeding the Eskom network (Eskom Connection Standard NRS 097-2-1).
  • Synchronise the genset or inverter with the critical busbar before transfer.
  • Coordinate fault clearance so a downstream fault doesn't collapse the islanded bus.

GNTech integrates Pronutec RMUs and Telergon isolation switches into turnkey islanding schemes that satisfy both NRS 097 and SANS 10142.

Typical ROI Profile

For a 500 kW facility facing Stage 4 load-shedding (12+ hours per day):

ComponentCapital Cost (approx.)
500 kWp solar arrayR4.5M
2 MWh BESSR6.5M
Switchgear and integrationR1.2M
Total~R12.2M

At R2.50/kWh tariff escalation and 280+ load-shedding days per year, a well-sized system achieves payback in 4–6 years, with 20 years of additional low-cost generation thereafter.

Section 12B of the Income Tax Act provides an accelerated depreciation allowance on renewable energy assets, further improving the after-tax return.

What to Watch For

Poor battery chemistry selection: Lead-acid UPS batteries are not designed for daily deep cycling; they degrade rapidly and may not survive a full load-shedding season. Insist on LFP or NMC chemistry with a cycle-life warranty.

Undersized inverters: String inverters rated for the PV array peak output can be overwhelmed during fast cloud transients. Utility-scale and commercial inverters with grid-forming capability handle these events gracefully.

Absent arc-flash study: Adding a BESS introduces a new fault-current source. Your protective device coordination study must be updated before commissioning.
